What are the engineering plastic materials suitable for machining

In addition to metal materials, the common materials in CNC machining factories are engineering plastics. Plastic materials have the irreplaceable insulation of metal.

Engineering plastics refer to plastics that can be used in mechanical equipment and engineering structures. They have metal-like properties and have high strength, rigidity and toughness. The common mechanically processed engineering plastics mainly include the following types:

Common mechanical CNC processing plastic material:

Nylon (PA\polyamide)

Features: high strength, wear resistance, fatigue resistance, oil resistance, water resistance, mold resistance, non-toxic, high water absorption

Application: Friction reduction and transmission parts in general machining parts: bearings, gears, cams, guide plates, tire cords, etc.

2. Common machining plastic material: PC (polycarbonate)

Features: good overall performance, good impact toughness, good dimensional stability, colorless and transparent, low water absorption, good heat resistance,

Good creep resistance and electrical insulation, not resistant to alkalis, ketones, amines, aromatic hydrocarbons

Application: Machining gears, racks, worm gears, worms, bulletproof glass, capacitors, etc.

 

3. Common mechanical processing plastic material: ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer)

Features: Good comprehensive performance, impact resistance, good dimensional stability, easy to electroplate, easy to machine, light in weight, opaque.

Application: anti-friction and wear-resistant and transmission parts, gears, impellers, mechanical equipment shells, mechanical processing structural parts, etc.

 

4. Common mechanical processing plastic materials: PMMA (plexiglass, polymethyl methacrylate)

Features: high transparency, low density, high strength, good toughness, UV resistance and atmospheric aging resistance,

Low hardness, poor heat resistance, easily soluble in organic solvents

Application: Machining parts with transparency and strength: signs, transparent pipes, optical lenses, etc.

Common mechanical CNC processing plastic material:

PTFE (F-4, PTFE)

Features: Very superior chemical corrosion resistance, known as the "king of plastics".

High temperature resistance, low temperature performance, small friction coefficient, self-lubricating.

Minimal water absorption, low strength, high viscosity after heating.

Applications: chemical pipelines, pumps, linings, isolation protective screens for electrical equipment, machined parts for corrosive media filtration, etc.

 

Common mechanical CNC processing plastic material:

Epoxy (EP)

Features: high strength, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, good insulation, easy machining, high price

Applications: plastic molds, precision measuring tools, electrical and electronic components, etc.

7. Common mechanical processing plastic materials: Bakelite CNC processing (bake-lite)

Bakelite CNC machining parts have good mechanical strength, anti-static, insulation and other excellent characteristics, and are suitable for PCB fixtures, backing plates, fixtures and other applications.

The disadvantage of bake-lite processing parts is that it is easy to chip during the processing process, the tool wear is relatively large during CNC processing, and dust will be generated during the processing process.

In addition to the above-mentioned plastic materials suitable for machining, common engineering plastics for machining include: POM processing parts (polyoxymethylene), PU processing (polyurethane), PI (polyimide) processing, PCTFE processing parts (polyoxymethylene) Chlorofluoroethylene), UPE processing parts, etc., when selecting materials for design drawings, it is necessary to select appropriate engineering plastics according to the use environment and matching requirements of plastic machining parts.
